Target Information
Glutamate receptors mediate most excitatory neurotransmission in the brain and play key roles in neural plasticity, development, and neurodegeneration.
Ionotropic glutamate receptors are categorized into NMDA and kainate/AMPA receptors, both containing glutamate-gated, cation-specific ion channels.
Kainate/AMPA receptors are co-localized with NMDA receptors in many synapses and consist of seven subunits (GluR-1 to -7).
The NMDA receptors exhibit slow kinetics and high Ca²⁺ permeability, composed of five subunits: epsilon 1–4 and one zeta subunit.
The zeta subunit is expressed throughout the brainstem, while epsilon subunits show limited distribution.
