SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, is a virus that causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The CoV Spike (S) protein plays a crucial role in viral attachment, fusion, and entry, making it a key target for antibody development, entry inhibitors, and vaccines.
The Spike protein receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) binds strongly to human and bat angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors, with SARS-CoV-2 RBD showing higher affinity than SARS-CoV RBD.
S1 contains an RBD that specifically binds to ACE2 receptors on target cells.
