Target Information

Imalumab is a biosimilar antibody that targets MIF (macrophage migration inhibitory factor).
MIF was one of the first cytokine activities discovered and was initially described as a T cell-derived factor that inhibits macrophage migration (Weiser 1989).
Later, MIF was identified as a pituitary hormone acting as a counterregulatory factor to glucocorticoid action within the immune system (Bernhagen 1993, Mitchell 1995).
MIF is secreted from macrophages and T cells in response to physiological concentrations of glucocorticoids and counteracts the immunosuppressive effects of steroids on immune cell activation and cytokine production (Bucala 1998).
MIF plays a critical role in regulating inflammation and immunity.
