Escherichia coli (E. coli) are Gram-negative enteric bacteria that inhabit the human gut. Their presence in nature indicates human fecal contamination. E. coli can cause diseases such as urinary tract infections and neonatal meningitis. Certain enterotoxigenic strains can lead to severe intestinal diseases. E. coli are immunologically classified by serotyping based on three antigen types:
- O antigen: Somatic, corresponding to terminal sugars on the lipopolysaccharide
- K antigen: Capsular
- H antigen: Flagellar
