Target Information
This gene is a member of the natriuretic peptide family and encodes a secreted protein functioning as a cardiac hormone. The protein undergoes two cleavage events, one intracellular and another after secretion into the blood. Its biological actions include natriuresis, diuresis, vasorelaxation, and inhibition of renin and aldosterone secretion, playing a key role in cardiovascular homeostasis. Elevated levels in the bloodstream are indicative of heart failure. Mutations have been associated with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
