Target Information
Arylalkylamine N-Acetyltransferase (AANAT) is the penultimate enzyme in melatonin synthesis. Melatonin regulates sleep and circadian rhythm. AANAT levels vary significantly between day and night, influencing melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland and retina.
Research suggests that AANAT activity can be regulated by protein levels and by alternative mechanisms affecting melatonin production without altering AANAT protein abundance.
