Target Information
The BBSome complex functions as a coat complex required for sorting of specific membrane proteins to the primary cilia. It is essential for ciliogenesis but not for centriolar satellite function. This function involves the Rab8 GDP/GTP exchange factor, which localizes to the basal body and interacts with the BBSome. Rab8(GTP) promotes extension of the ciliary membrane. The BBSome associates with the ciliary membrane, binds to RAB3IP/Rabin8 (the GEF for Rab8), and facilitates docking and fusion of carrier vesicles to the base of the ciliary membrane. Proper BBSome assembly and ciliary localization are required for its function.
