Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and certain epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. Multiple isoforms exist, with CD44H being predominant in normal tissues.
It functions as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays a role in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing, and its expression may be upregulated in carcinomas, potentially related to metastatic potential.
CD44 is expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express high levels of CD44, and peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation.
Complex alternative splicing of CD44 transcripts leads to diverse isoforms with distinct functions. Disorders associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may be implicated in tumor metastasis formation.
