Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio (~75%) compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, which contain a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ significantly among species in sequence and biochemical properties, making identification by sequence homology difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein.
