Target Information

Cecropins are antimicrobial peptides first isolated from the hemolymph of Hyalophora cecropia, from which the term "cecropin" was derived. They lyse bacterial cell membranes, inhibit proline uptake, and cause membrane leakage. Cecropins play a major role in the cell-free immunity of insects and are small proteins (31–37 amino acids) active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Variants isolated from other insects have been named bactericidin, lepidopteran, sarcotoxin, etc., but are structurally related. Cecropin P1, an intestinal antibacterial peptide from Sus scrofa (pig), also belongs to this family, which includes Cecropin A and Cecropin B.
