DNA의 cytosine 잔기 메틸화는 유전자 발현 조절, 유전체 각인 및 포유류 발생에 필수적인 역할을 합니다. CpG 섬의 과메틸화 또는 저메틸화는 암 발생과 연관될 수 있습니다. 포유류 DNA 메틸트랜스퍼라제 유전자는 Dnmt1, Dnmt2, Dnmt3 세 가지 계열이 알려져 있으며, Dnmt1은 증식 세포에서 지속적으로 발현되고, Dnmt2는 낮은 수준으로 발현됩니다. Dnmt2는 DNA (cytosine-5)-methyltransferase의 특징적인 서열 모티프를 포함하지만 다른 진핵 메틸트랜스퍼라제에서 공통적으로 발견되는 N-말단 조절 도메인은 결여되어 있습니다.
