Target Information
The CDKN2A gene produces several transcript variants differing in their first exons. At least three alternatively spliced variants encode distinct proteins, two of which are CDK4 inhibitors. Another transcript includes an alternate first exon located 20 Kb upstream and encodes an ARF protein that stabilizes p53 by sequestering MDM2, preventing p53 degradation. Despite structural differences, both CDK inhibitor isoforms and ARF product share a role in G1 cell cycle control. This gene is frequently mutated or deleted in various tumors and serves as a key tumor suppressor.
