Target Information
Vision involves the conversion of light into electrochemical signals that are processed by the retina and subsequently sent to and interpreted by the brain. This process begins when rhodopsin absorbs light within the retina. Upon photoexcitation, rhodopsin activates transducin, a GTP-binding protein, which promotes the hydrolysis of cGMP by phosphodiesterase (PDE). The resulting decrease in intracellular cGMP leads to closure of ion channels, membrane hyperpolarization, and signal transmission. Rhodopsin activity is terminated by phosphorylation followed by arrestin binding. Transducin subunit composition differs between rod and cone photoreceptor cells, contributing to distinct light sensitivities.
