Target Information
This gene generates several transcript variants differing in their first exons. At least three alternatively spliced variants encode distinct proteins, two of which are CDK4 kinase inhibitors. Another variant encodes an alternate open reading frame (ARF) protein that stabilizes tumor suppressor p53 by sequestering MDM2, preventing p53 degradation. Despite structural differences, all isoforms contribute to G1 cell cycle control. CDKN2A is frequently mutated or deleted in various tumors and functions as a key tumor suppressor gene.
