Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), also known as Proto-oncogene c-ErbB-1, Receptor tyrosine-protein kinase erbB-1 or HER-1, is an integral cell membrane protein present in various normal and malignant epithelial cells.
EGFR contains a tyrosine-specific protein kinase domain with an extracellular region that binds EGF and an intracellular carboxy-terminal region possessing tyrosine kinase activity.
Binding of EGF to its specific EGFR leads to increased DNA synthesis and initiates signaling cascades involved in:
- Cell proliferation
- Differentiation
- Repair of damaged epithelial tissue
