The gene NPAS4 (neuronal PAS domain protein 4) is mapped to human chromosome 11q13.
It is also referred to as NXF (neuronal transcription factor) and LE-PAS (limbic-enriched PAS domain protein).
The encoded protein belongs to the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH)-PAS (Per-ARNT-Sim) protein family.

NPAS4 is mainly expressed in the brain, with low levels also present in the testis, and is localized in the nucleus.
