SUN2 (Sad1 and UNC84 domain containing 2) gene encodes an 85 kDa inner nuclear membrane protein with the SUN domain localized to the periplasmic space between the inner and outer nuclear membranes.
It forms a bridge or LINC complex across the nuclear envelope (NE), connecting NE to the cytoskeleton and contributing to nuclear positioning and cellular rigidity.
The N-terminus extends into the nucleoplasm, while the C-terminal SUN domain in the perinuclear space associates with short lumenal peptides of KASH domain-containing membrane proteins of the outer nuclear membrane (ONM) to form a molecular link between ONM and inner nuclear membrane (INM).
