Target Information
Agrin is a molecule located in the basal lamina of muscle cells and directs key events in postsynaptic differentiation. It plays a critical role in clustering acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) at the neuromuscular junction. Various agrin splice variants arise from alternative mRNA splicing, with forms containing inserts at the carboxy terminus (y and z) showing high affinity for AChRs. Muscle alpha-dystroglycan is proposed as the receptor for agrin’s clustering activity, though this remains debated. Tyrosine phosphorylation is an early required step in AChR aggregation, and the receptor tyrosine kinase MuSK interacts with agrin and localizes to developing muscle.
