Auramine O is used for staining acid-fast organisms such as coccidia. Along with carbol, it generates a bright yellow fluorochrome of tubercle bacilli and is effective in detecting positive tuberculosis cases. Auramine O binds to the mycolic acid in the bacterial cell wall.
