C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12), also known as stromal cell-derived factor 1α (SDF-1α), is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 10q11.
SDF-1α and SDF-1β are stromal-derived CXC chemokines that signal through the C-X-C motif chemokine receptor-4 (CXCR4).
CXCL12 is mainly expressed in the inflamed and failing myocardium.
