Recombinant Pigment Epithelium-derived Factor (PEDF) from mouse, expressed in E. coli.
Also known as Serpin F1, Stromal Cell-derived Factor 3, Caspin.
PEDF is a 47 kDa secreted glycoprotein belonging to the non-inhibitory serpin family. It is widely expressed in adult and fetal tissues including brain, spinal cord, plasma, bone, prostate, pancreas, heart, and lung. PEDF functions as an angiogenesis inhibitor with neurotrophic, immunomodulatory, and antitumor properties. It counterbalances the pro-angiogenic effect of VEGF and is one of the most abundant proteins released by adipocytes, inducing insulin resistance in adipocytes and human skeletal muscle cells. Recent studies show PEDF maintains the self-renewal of pluripotent human embryonic stem cells.
