Insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II), also known as multiplication stimulating activity (MSA), exhibits bioactivities nearly identical to IGF-I. IGF-II expression is highest in fetal tissues, playing a major role in growth and development. After birth, its expression decreases significantly but remains detectable in various tissues and some tumors. IGF-II interacts with IGF-II receptor (IGF-IIR), IGF-IR, and weakly with the insulin receptor (IR). In adults, IGF-II bioactivity is primarily mediated through IGF-IR, while during embryogenesis, IGF-IIR and IR may also contribute to normal growth.
