Irisin is an described exercise-induced hormone secreted by skeletal muscle in mice and humans. Irisin is cleaved from the type I membrane protein FNDC5 (fibronectin type III domain containing 5). FNDC5 is mainly expressed in the muscles. Low levels of the mRNA are also present in the kidney, liver and lung. The gene encoding irisin is mapped to human chromosome 1p35.1.
