Recombinant Epidermal Growth Factor, human (hEGF), is produced in E. coli and purified by standard chromatographic techniques. It is supplied as a 100 μg white lyophilizate, filtered through a 0.2 μm membrane.

Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) is a small mitogenic polypeptide found in many mammalian species and distributed throughout various tissues and body fluids.
Human EGF is identical to β-urogastrone, known for its ability to inhibit gastric acid secretion. Of the 53 amino acids in human EGF, 37 are identical to those in mouse EGF (70% homology), and both share the same disulfide bond pattern.
EGF stimulates proliferation and differentiation of a wide variety of ectodermal and mesodermal cells, such as fibroblasts, glial cells, keratinocytes, epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and chondrocytes.
It is a common component in serum-free media formulations for various cell types.
