Target Information
Glutamate receptors are the primary excitatory neurotransmitter receptors in the mammalian brain and play key roles in normal neurophysiological processes. The kainate family of glutamate receptors functions as ligand-activated ion channels, composed of four subunits including the product encoded by this gene. The subunit is edited at multiple sites within the first and second transmembrane domains, affecting receptor structure and function. Alternative splicing produces different isoforms. Mutations in GRIK2 are associated with autosomal recessive cognitive disability and neurodevelopmental disorders such as impaired language and ataxia.
