This gene belongs to the fringe gene family, which also includes radical and lunatic fringe genes. These encode evolutionarily conserved secreted proteins involved in the Notch receptor pathway, helping to demarcate boundaries during embryonic development. Fringe proteins exhibit fucose-specific beta-1,3-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase activity that elongates O-linked fucose residues on Notch, modulating Notch signaling.
