Target Information
Steroid receptors are ligand-dependent intracellular proteins that regulate transcription of specific genes upon activation by corresponding hormones. Prior to activation, these receptors associate with multiple proteins, including heat shock proteins (HSP70, HSP90), immunophilins (FKBP52, FKBP54, CyP-40), and other proteins such as p23, p60, and p48.
p23, together with HSP70, HSP90, and p60, forms a transient intermediate complex with the progesterone receptor (PR). The cloned human p23 encodes a 160-amino-acid protein highly conserved across species, with an acidic C-terminal domain rich in aspartic acid and multiple phosphorylation sites.
In vitro studies suggest that p23 binds to HSP90 and is essential for HSP90 and CyP-40 binding to PR. Although its precise function remains unclear, p23 is considered an important factor in PR function.
