Target Information
The PCBP2 gene encodes a multifunctional protein that, along with PCBP-1 and hnRNPK, serves as a major cellular poly(rC)-binding protein. It contains three K-homologous (KH) domains involved in RNA binding. PCBP2 acts as a translational coactivator of poliovirus RNA by binding to the IRES stem-loop IV and the 5′-terminal cloverleaf structure, promoting viral RNA replication. It is also implicated in the translational regulation of 15-lipoxygenase mRNA, HPV16 L2 mRNA, and hepatitis A virus RNA. Additionally, PCBP2 contributes to the stability of alpha-globin mRNA through formation of a sequence-specific mRNP complex. PCBP2 and PCBP-1 are paralogous genes, with PCBP3 and PCBP4 arising from gene duplication events. Two processed pseudogenes (PCBP2P1 and PCBP2P2) have also been identified. Multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms exist for this gene.
