Excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) is a membrane-bound protein that clears the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate from the extracellular space at synapses in the central nervous system.
Proper glutamate clearance is essential for synaptic activation and prevention of neuronal damage.
Mutations or decreased expression of this protein are associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene have been identified.
