Target Information

ADAMs (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain), also known as MDCs (metalloproteinase, disintegrin, and cysteine-rich domain) or cellular disintegrins, are a family of proteins expressed in various tissues. They are involved in proteolysis, adhesion, fusion, and intracellular signaling.

ADAM23 is exclusively expressed in fetal and adult brain and may function as an integrin ligand in neural cells. Adhesion of neuroblastoma and astrocytoma cells is promoted by the disintegrin-like domain of ADAM23 and mediated by interaction with αvβ3 integrin. The metalloproteinase-like domain of ADAM23 lacks the typical catalytic residues, suggesting it primarily functions in cell adhesion rather than protease-mediated events. Evidence also indicates ADAM23 may act as a tumor suppressor gene.
