Serum response factor (SRF) is a transcription factor that binds the serum response element (SRE), mediating the transient response of many cellular genes to growth stimulation. SRF regulates several muscle genes in response to growth factors and recruits myogenic factors to activate these genes. It is essential for vertebrate mesoderm formation and cardiovascular development. Myocardin and myocardin-related transcription factors (MRTF-A and MRTF-B) interact with SRF to stimulate its transcriptional activity, with MRTF-B being crucial for skeletal myogenic differentiation.
