Specificity Comments:
Human von Willebrand factor (VWF or factor VIII-related antigen) is a 309 kDa multimeric plasma glycoprotein essential for hemostasis. It promotes platelet adhesion to vascular injury sites by bridging sub-endothelial collagen and platelet receptor complex GPIb-IX-V.
VWF also acts as a chaperone for coagulation factor VIII, stabilizing its structure and preventing premature clearance from plasma.
It is synthesized by endothelial cells and expressed in various vascular-origin tumors.
IHC results assist in classification of acute myeloid leukemia FAB type M7, angiosarcoma, and epithelioid hemangioendothelioma.
Target Information
Von Willebrand factor (vWF) consists of self-aggregated glycoprotein subunits synthesized in endothelial cells and megakaryocytes.
The monomeric vWF unit has a molecular mass of 225 kDa.
vWF binds circulating factor VIIIc (antihemophilic factor), stabilizing it and playing a key role in normal primary hemostasis.
