Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where the ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, affecting sequence and biochemical properties, which complicates recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found on chromosome 6p.
