Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes that contain a 5S rRNA.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S12P family. The encoded protein is a key component of the ribosomal small subunit and regulates decoding fidelity and susceptibility to aminoglycoside antibiotics. The mitochondrial seryl-tRNA synthetase gene is located upstream and adjacent to this gene, and both are candidate genes for autosomal dominant deafness (DFNA4). Splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR have been found; all variants encode the same protein.
