Target Information

Several proteins are prenylated and methylated at their carboxyl-terminal ends. Prenylation, initially thought to be important only for membrane attachment, also plays a role in protein-protein interactions.
The only nuclear proteins known to be prenylated in mammalian cells are prelamin A and B-type lamins.
Prelamin A undergoes farnesylation and carboxymethylation on the cysteine residue of a carboxyl-terminal CaaX motif, which is later removed during maturation.
The NARF protein binds to the prenylated prelamin A carboxyl-terminal tail domain and may be part of a prelamin A endoprotease complex.
It is located in the nucleus and partially colocalizes with the nuclear lamina.
NARF shares limited sequence similarity with iron-only bacterial hydrogenases.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, including one with a novel exon generated by RNA editing.
