Target Information

The tachykinins are a family of small peptides that include the neurotransmitters substance P, neurokinin A, and neurokinin B. These act on three distinct seven-transmembrane G-protein coupled receptors at different concentrations.
The NK-3 receptor (NK3R) has greatest affinity for neurokinin B and is highly expressed in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei. Upon ligand binding, NK3R activates a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system, likely leading to the release of vasopressin and oxytocin.
NK3R may play roles in learning and memory, as mice lacking this gene show cognitive deficits. Although suggested to regulate vagal afferent relay neurons, these receptors are likely activated by substance P or neurokinin A, since airway nerves do not express neurokinin B.
