Target Information
SLC26A3 is a chloride/bicarbonate exchanger involved in electrolyte and fluid absorption within the colon. The protein encoded by the SLC26A3 gene is a transmembrane glycoprotein functioning as a sulfate transporter, localized to the mucosa. It facilitates the exchange of chloride and bicarbonate ions across the cell membrane. SLC26A3 is primarily found in the apical membrane of the columnar epithelium and some goblet cells of the lower intestinal tract.
Dysfunction of this protein is associated with congenital chloride diarrhea and congenital secretory chloride diarrhea type 1.
