Target Information

The Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen acts as an oncofetal antigen, with low expression in normal adult tissues but increasing to fetal levels of expression in hyperplasia or malignancy. It is considered a pan-carcinoma marker. This gene belongs to the mucin family and encodes a membrane-bound, glycosylated phosphoprotein anchored to the apical surface of many epithelia via a transmembrane domain. The degree of glycosylation varies with cell type and includes a 20 amino acid variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) domain, with repeat numbers ranging from 20 to 120 among individuals. The protein serves protective and signaling functions, and its overexpression or altered glycosylation has been associated with carcinomas. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist, though only some full-length forms are confirmed.
