Target Information
The Cathepsin L protein is a lysosomal cysteine proteinase that plays a major role in intracellular protein catabolism. Its substrates include collagen, elastin, and alpha-1 protease inhibitor, a key regulator of neutrophil elastase activity. This enzyme is implicated in pathological processes such as myofibril necrosis in myopathies, myocardial ischemia, and renal tubular response to proteinuria. It belongs to the peptidase C1 family and is a disulfide-linked dimer composed of heavy and light chains derived from a single precursor. Multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
