Target Information
The GPI gene encodes a multifunctional phosphoglucose isomerase involved in energy metabolism. The enzyme catalyzes the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate.
Intracellularly, it participates in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, while extracellularly it acts as a neurotrophic factor for spinal and sensory neurons.
Mutations in this gene can cause nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia and severe enzyme deficiency may lead to hydrops fetalis, neonatal death, or neurological impairment.
