Target Information
Adipose tissue functions as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes secrete various physiologically important proteins including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, adipocyte complement-related protein of 30 kDa (Acrp30), resistin, and perilipin.
Perilipin is an intracellular lipid droplet-associated protein that is hormonally regulated and localized on the lipid droplet surface. Upon lipolytic stimulation, perilipin is phosphorylated by protein kinase A, which modulates hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) activity to control triacylglycerol hydrolysis.
Perilipin expression is restricted to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells, and two isoforms, Perilipin A and B, are known to result from alternative splicing of a single gene.
