Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the serpin superfamily and the ovalbumin-serpin subfamily. It was originally identified as a placental thrombin inhibitor. The mouse homolog is expressed in the inner ear hair cells. Mutations in this gene are linked to nonsyndromic progressive hearing loss, suggesting its role in protecting inner ear cells from lysosomal leakage under stress conditions. Loss of this protection can lead to cell death and sensorineural hearing loss. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
