Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the S100 family of calcium-binding proteins containing two EF-hand motifs. S100 proteins are localized in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of various cells and regulate processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation.
S100 genes form a cluster on chromosome 1q21 and include at least 13 members. S100A13 is widely expressed, with high levels in the thyroid gland. In smooth muscle cells, it co-expresses with other S100 family members in the nucleus and stress fibers, suggesting roles in signal transduction. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
