CI072 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 엔도솜 수송 조절에 중요한 역할을 하며, 자가포식 및 엔도사이토시스 과정에 관여하는 Rab 단백질과 상호작용합니다.
이 유전자의 전사체 내 5’ 엑손 사이의 GGGGCC 반복 서열이 2–22회에서 700–1600회로 확장되면 9p 연관 ALS(근위축성 측삭경화증) 및 FTD(전두측두엽 치매)와 관련이 있습니다 (PMID: 21944778, 21944779).
반복 확장은 pre-mRNA 안정화 및 불용성 디펩타이드 반복 단백질 응집체 축적을 유발하여 FTD-ALS 환자에서 병리적 영향을 줄 수 있습니다 (PMID: 23393093).
