Background
This gene encodes one of the numerous actin-binding proteins that regulate the actin cytoskeleton. The protein binds F-actin and interacts with 5-lipoxygenase, the first committed enzyme in leukotriene biosynthesis. Although previously reported to map to chromosome 17 in the Smith-Magenis syndrome region, the best alignments indicate chromosome 16. The Smith-Magenis region also contains two related pseudogenes.
