Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by dramatic periodicity in protein abundance through the cell cycle. Cyclins regulate CDK kinases, and different cyclins show distinct expression and degradation patterns, contributing to the temporal coordination of mitotic events.
Cyclin E1 forms a complex with CDK2, functioning as a regulatory subunit required for the G1/S transition. It accumulates at the G1-S phase boundary and is degraded during S phase. Overexpression of this gene has been observed in many tumors, leading to chromosome instability and potential tumorigenesis. Cyclin E1 is also involved in the phosphorylation of NPAT protein, which participates in cell cycle control.
