Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by periodic changes in protein abundance during the cell cycle. Cyclins regulate CDK kinases, and distinct cyclins exhibit specific expression and degradation patterns that coordinate mitotic events. Cyclin T2 and its kinase partner CDK9 form subunits of the transcription elongation factor p-TEFb. The p-TEFb complex containing Cyclin T2 interacts with and negatively regulates HIV-1 Tat protein. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 1, and multiple transcript variants arise from alternative splicing (RefSeq, Dec 2010).
