Background
Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SORD; EC 1.1.1.14)는 polyol과 해당 ketose 간의 상호전환을 촉매하며, aldose reductase (ALDR1)와 함께 sorbitol 경로를 구성합니다. 이 경로는 당뇨병 합병증의 발달에 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 첫 번째 반응은 ALDR1에 의해 NADPH를 보조인자로 사용하여 glucose를 sorbitol로 환원시키며, 이후 SORD가 NAD(+)를 이용해 sorbitol을 fructose로 산화시킵니다. (OMIM, Jul 2010)
