Background

This gene belongs to the M-phase phosphoprotein (MPP) family. It encodes a phosphoprotein with a J domain and a Myb DNA-binding domain, localizing to both the nucleus and cytosol. The protein forms a heterodimeric complex that associates with ribosomes, functioning as a molecular chaperone for nascent polypeptide chains. It has been identified as a leukemia-associated antigen, with expression upregulated in leukemic blasts. Chromosomal aberrations involving this gene are linked to primary head and neck squamous cell tumors. A pseudogene exists on chromosome 6, and alternatively spliced variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
