Target Information

The SMN complex plays a catalytic role in the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), which are essential components of the spliceosome. It is crucial for the splicing of cellular pre-mRNAs. Most spliceosomal snRNPs contain a common set of Sm proteins (SNRPB, SNRPD1, SNRPD2, SNRPD3, SNRPE, SNRPF, SNRPG) that form a heptameric ring on the Sm site of small nuclear RNA. In the cytosol, these Sm proteins are held in an inactive 6S pICln-Sm complex by the chaperone CLNS1A. The SMN complex dissociates CLNS1A and facilitates the assembly of core snRNPs, which are then transported to the nucleus. GEMIN5 acts as the snRNA-binding protein within the SMN complex.
